Georgia frees inmates to ease prison crowding crisis
Judges and law officers divided over Georgia's plan to release hundreds of noncapital offenders. District Attorney Fred Hasty cited a threat linked to one released inmate aimed at President Ford and others, while officials argued early release helps amid overcrowding and funding shortages. About 340 inmates were freed in the first step toward releasing 1,000 soon and another 1,000 in six months.
