In Memphis a USDA report shows tail clipped pigs fetch higher prices. No tail hogs sold in Cookeville at 82.50 to 88.50 per cwt while tailed pigs brought about 78 per cwt. Livestock official cites crowding and tail biting as reasons for higher demand and prices.
The Nixon administration pledges substantial relief from rising food prices and more meat next year while warning unemployment may rise and interest rates stay high. Economic adviser Stein cites declines in wholesale and retail food prices since September and forecasts calmer food inflation, with beef and pork supplies improving by spring and summer.
Eight women employees downtown toured Weber's Cafe to sample the beef sandwiches and cherry cobbler before its closure. They were escorted by Paul Steigerwald Jr. of American Savings & Loan, with Bud and Dick Poynter showing the interior and noting the carved bar and quarter sawn oak cabinets to be moved to Weber's.

The Pentagon placed Army Navy and Air Force units in the United States Europe and the Pacific on alert amid reports the Soviet Union might deploy troops to enforce a cease fire in the Middle East. Units including the 82nd Airborne and Strategic Air Command forces were named with bases in Offutt Malmstrom Plattsburgh Lowry Dover Ellington Griffiss McGuire and Ft Hood and on Guam.
The Associated Press reports Israel claims an absolute cease-fire on both fronts while U N observers move to new lines in Egypt. The United States rejects Soviet troop enforcement while eight nonaligned nations push for a U N force to guard the front. Egypt accuses Israel of attacks on both east and west banks of the Suez Canal.
Partly cloudy conditions with a low near 50 in Middletown tonight and a high around 70 Friday. Yesterday's high was 76 and overnight low 46. Extended outlook shows fair skies Saturday through Monday with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the 40s.
Spokesmen at Lockbourne near Columbus and Wright Patterson in Dayton refused to confirm an alert citing Washington as the information source. News outlets were denied entry and escorted access, while the Defense Construction Supply Center reported notification of an alert but said it was not directly affected.
