A retrospective on campaign humor shows Sargent Shriver, Spiro Agnew, and others trading quips. Stories include Shriver’s bacon price line misfiring with a rabbi’s wife, Agnew forgetting a candidate’s name, and McGovern spoofing Nixon’s football metaphor.
Communist rockets struck the Da Nang air base and nearby towns including a village joining area, a provincial capital 15 miles away, and a district town 40 miles from Saigon. An American civilian and 17 South Vietnamese died. 2 Americans and 92 Vietnamese were wounded. U S B 52s resumed strikes on supply caches in North Vietnam after a 24 hour halt for South Vietnam targets. Fighter bombers remained limited above the 20th parallel to aid peace negotiations.
Washington reports that H R Haldeman and four other Nixon associates controlled a covert campaign fund used for spying and sabotage. Grand jury testimony cited by Hugh Sloan Jr. identifies the five as fund controllers linked to the Watergate break in at Democratic National Committee HQ. Gerald Warren offered no comment.
Price increases for frozen and canned foods were approved by the Price Commission after requests from Curtice Burns Agway, Consolidated Foods, and Stokely Van Camp. Increases range from 0.4 to 17.26 percent, driven by unfavorable growing conditions including Tropical Storm Agnes, with other requests pending.
An American and a Briton won the Nobel Prize in economics for theories aiding risk assessment and economic stability policies. The Swedish Academy awarded the $98,100 prize, completing this year’s Nobel slate with an American British sweep of the scientific fields. The two winners will share the prize money.

New York AP reports Bishop John E. Hines will resign as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church after eight years, effective May 1974 in New Orleans. He says the church should be served by a younger leader after the 1973 election, noting his programs for self help funding faced conservative criticism.

The drive relies on payroll deductions and direct payments from employees and local employers.
