A 200 foot high flame from a burning oil and gas well near Hawkins Texas endangers the town of about 2000 people. Officials fear oil spread if gas pressure drops. Firefighting efforts include shutting nearby wells and injecting salt water while residents evacuate.
Governor Frank Lausche lauded President Eisenhower at the Ohio Society of New York banquet, expressing unity and confidence in his leadership during illness. Lausche said Ohioans wish for a full recovery and noted Eisenhower’s military and civil leadership. He received honorary membership and a good luck medallion. He planned to attend a Broadway show before returning to Ohio.
In Toledo Ohio three men entered a Howard Johnson restaurant in the early morning held porter Thomas Mays at gunpoint and removed a basement safe containing about 1790 dollars. The thieves fled in a car owned by Mays.
Bank teller Leonard S. Pirri was held up by two gunmen as he returned from lunch. The robbers seized a small sack they believed contained funds for the bank but it held only crumbs from Pirri's luncheon sandwiches.

The Turner Fernstermaker Shoe Store occupied the center building which was reported about gone two hours after the outbreak.
Newport police raided the Beverly Hills Country Club seeking illegal dice poker and blackjack games but found a legal billiards exhibition instead. About 100 people watched as officers believed gaming gear could be quickly repurposed. no arrests were made.
British official Peter Thorneycroft faces a question from MP Pilkington on why hydrazine carbonyl methyltrimethylammonium chloride duty rose from 10 to 33 percent. A Coast Guard cutter searched unsuccessfully for Joseph H Richards and Laura Richards, a honeymooning Ohio couple missing after a small two seater plane vanished between Key West and Havana. Joe L Brown, 37, son of comedian Joe E Brown, is named general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for a one year term. He will assume duties Nov 1 with full charge. Branch Rickey Sr remains as director and Branch Jr continues to direct the farm system. Brown previously served as general manager and president of the Pirates New Orleans club.

Two men detained as possible suspects answered descriptions of cars seen near the Robinson Woods parking lot where the bodies were found. Rewards total about 30000 from city Cook County and others while 1,600 janitors join the search.
In London the Chief Justice Lord Goddard quashed a Nottingham conviction after Turner and Son Ltd appealed over a customer finding a piece of string in bread. He said a little string does not harm anyone and the loaf is not unfit for consumption if the string is removed.
