Washington AP reports a surge in home canning amid inflation and Ford's WIN garden push. A Department of Agriculture briefing warns of higher prices and possible shortages in fall and winter. industry sources cite limited raw materials and slow responses from steel and lid makers while 6 percent more gardens were planted this year.
Administration adviser Paul W. McCracken says the U S economy is in early recession territory and could form a sharp brief V shaped downturn with unemployment near 7 percent and output down about 4 percent next year. L William Seidman adds housing faces deep decline and stagflation accompanies inflation as the two main problems.
Lima Ohio AP reports the Ohio Lottery Commission announced the weekly winning single number 952 and the double number 965 on Thursday.
Great Western United Corp says after tax profits jumped twelvefold to 20.96 million or 9.23 a share for the quarter ended Sept 30, from 1.6 million or 3 cents a share a year earlier. Sales more than doubled to 180 million. SuCrest Corp raises wholesale sugar prices by 4.95 per hundred pounds in key regions.
President Nguyen Van Thieu forced four cabinet members to resign amid Washington pressure and domestic protests. The move targeted Hoang Duc Nha, his close confidant and Information Minister, amid corruption charges and access limits that angered generals and the U S Embassy.

Doctors indicated possible surgery though officials expected release by week’s end. Nixon traveled from his San Clemente home by car and entered via a rear service entrance to protect privacy.
School officials plan talks with City Building counterparts on possible shared purchasing storage and maintenance to save money. Board member Mrs. Joan Compton urged cooperation citing taxpayer benefits while Supt. Robert Johnson would arrange initial meetings with city purchasing, and officials acknowledged the plans are embryonic but promising amid tight finances.
