GI Bill overpayments may not be recovered

Millions of dollars in GI Bill benefits paid to veterans last year may never be recouped, says VA official Martin D. Carlin. Of 446.4 million in overpayments, 333.5 million was recovered, 15.1 million deemed uncollectible, while remaining cases await resolution. The shift to monthly checks complicates recovery as quick disbursement leads to overpayments when notifications are delayed. The VA notes most overpayments stem from a minority of veterans and schools, with penalties for fraud and options to work out repayment plans.
