Deadly shooting rampage leaves four dead in Michigan

State police say a 21 year old, Billy Edward Hardesty of Van Buren Township near Belleville, opened fire with a .22 caliber pump action rifle. The attacker was hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire with troopers at his home. Four victims died and two were wounded in two linked shootings, first at Abigail's Dirty Shame Saloon parking lot then at a nearby home near Interstate 94. Authorities did not release all identities.

Saudi Arabian and Sudanese troops prepared to replace Syrian units around Beirut as part of a plan to prevent renewed Christian militias fighting. Lebanese President Elias Sarkis backed a 13 day cease fire extension with the Syrian militias. The Arab Deterrent Force endorsed the plan at a weekend meeting with Syria and fellow contributors. The force includes about 26,000 Syrians, 2,000 Saudis, and 800 Sudanese troops.

Housing budgets strain as families take extra jobs

American families stretch budgets to buy homes as housing starts rise 1.4 percent in September to a pace of 2.07 million for the year. A savings and loan economist notes affordability is at risk if inflation remains high.
