Fire at a University Circle halfway house for men killed Yoji Sakamoto, 40, and a second man, with at least six others injured. Hospitals reported several burn and smoke inhalation cases as firefighters battled the blaze for two hours. Dr. Marion Fisher notes calls nationwide on identifying and treating the itch causing disease. A Cleveland distributor reports a run on scabies medicine, prompting pint bottle shipments. Local pharmacies vary in stock though some report selling out in Wellington Oberlin Lorain. Treatment requires a week to 10 days and isolation from work or school.
Rain is expected in the Middletown area tonight with lows in the low 50s. Saturday will be cloudy with highs in the upper 50s and yesterday reached 58 degrees. An 0.7 inch rainfall was recorded by 8 a.m. today. The extended outlook shows fair skies Sunday and a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday.
Thomas Gibbons of Key West recounted surviving three days at sea after his rented cabin cruiser sank sixty miles west of Key West. He and two companions, Ross and Dorothy Corwin, were swept overboard and rescued by a shrimp boat. Coast Guard planes and a cutter failed to locate the missing pair. Gibbons described the sinking and his attempt to reach Dry Tortugas by clinging to a buoy and an inner tube.
