Sadat says Egypt ready for cease fire and UN peace talk

Cairo reports President Anwar Sadat warned Egyptian missiles are ready to strike Israel but Egypt is prepared to accept a cease fire and attend a United Nations peace conference on condition Israel withdraws from lands it occupied in 1967 and Palestinian rights are restored. He said Suez Canal could be opened immediately as a contribution to world prosperity.

Agnew appeals for reforms as he proclaims innocence

Former vice president Spiro Agnew, in a televised valedictory, denounced charges of extortion and tax evasion while urging campaign spending reform and ethics in government contracting. He defended his resignation as a quick resolve and vowed to defend his integrity.

Israeli cargo ship moves to battle zone with U S arms

The Israeli freighter Aben Dat at Norfolk naval base loaded with 250 and 500 pound bombs and four American A4 Skyhawk fighters and tanks. The ship flew no flag and sailed amid high security as Washington prepared to resupply Israel in the Middle East conflict. The Iwo Jima helicopter carrier also loaded gear and headed toward the Mediterranean with Marines aboard.

Gasoline price ceilings eased by city council

The council moved to loosen price ceilings for about a third of independent stations allowing increases from one tenth to 12 cents per gallon. Only dealers with recent wholesale rises can raise prices, with automatic pass through possible after Nov. 1 to cover future wholesale costs. Charles Binsted praised the relief for dealers.

EPA approves 1977 traffic controls for 22 metros

The EPA under court order outlines restrictions including pollution-control inspections, parking surcharges, older vehicle modifications and car pool lanes to meet 1977 clean air deadlines. Five California areas face the toughest limits with drastic vehicle reductions. Los Angeles and San Francisco would nearly halt traffic. Denver labeled a sixth with fuel rationing as a last resort, while other cities like Boston, Portland, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Dallas Fort Worth, Austin Waco, San Antonio, Houston Galveston, El Paso and Las Cruces Alamogordo face various measures.
