Washington reports the United States and the Soviet Union signed a three year maritime agreement expanding trade. Forty ports in each nation open to the other’s merchant ships with up to one third of sea borne trade carried by each side.
An Ilyushin-62 on an unscheduled Paris to Moscow flight crashed in heavy rain near the village of Chernaya Gryaz, seven miles from Sheremetyevo, killing 172 aboard. Passengers and crew included Chilean tourists and foreign nationals. US officials reported no Americans on board.
