Soviet bombers probe US radar off East Coast near Boston

Soviet Tu-95D reconnaissance bombers, flying from Cuba, approached the Atlantic coast to inspect the destroyer Spruance and drop radar chaff. Interceptors were scrambled from Atlantic City and Otis AFB, while a Navy P3 tracked the Bears near Bermuda. Pentagon officials say the mission tested radar defenses and intelligence gathering.
