Food stamp benefits to rise again on Jan 1 1979
Government experts expect a further increase in food stamp benefits for about 16 million Americans on January 1 1979. The Agriculture Department projects at least a 5 percent rise as required by law, using the thrifty food plan to set allocations. The July 1 1978 four member household allowance was raised to 182 dollars. The program costs about 5.5 billion annually. The September thrifty plan will guide the January 1979 allocations based on the Labor Department’s October price report.
