The State Department moves to debunk a Soviet proposal on atomic energy as Undersecretary states the United States is abandoning the last restraints in its propaganda war with Russia. The report from Washington notes a shift toward a sharper red policy aimed at world domination.
Cuba Egypt and Norway were elected to two year terms on the United Nations Security Council starting January 1. Cuba will replace Colombia, Norway takes Belgiums seat, Egypt succeeds none specified. State Department officials warned bluntly that Soviet aims are global domination and said restraint may fail but patience and fortitude remain the policy. Lovett disclosed Paris orders to debunk the Soviet atomic energy proposal. Saltzman, in New Hampshire, called Soviet leadership a real aim of world domination and warned of coercion and double dealing.
The United Mine Workers leader backed Republican candidate Thomas Dewey through a political action resolution. He urged a holiday to let miners vote on November 2 while criticizing President Truman. The committee said Dewey has not reflected on UMW integrity or its officers and members.
The United Mine Workers convention endorsed a veteran bonus of 3 dollars per day in domestic service and 4 dollars per day overseas for World War II veterans, plus a 500 dollar aid payment for those wounded in action. Introduced by the McIntyre local union, the measure argues the majority of veterans faced poor homes, jobs and living costs after 1945.
The United Mine Workers convention adopted a resolution urging defeat of enemies and election of true friends. Vice President Kennedy urged delegates to vote with conscience on November 2 while plans for suspending coal industry operations on election day were discussed. Lewis criticized Truman and outlined a lean-year share-the-work program as a contract aim.
Detroit report states Carl Bolton, 39, a former CIO United Art Workers official, was formally accused of assault with intent to kill Walter P. Reuther. Judge Stein issued the warrant at the request of Prosecutor McNally, six months after the April 20 shooting that wounded Reuther. Bolton is jailed in Pontiac, Mich., on related charges.
Gustav Wiegner 24 of Dayton Ohio received two years less one day in an Assize Court in Prince George British Columbia after a jury convicted him of reduced manslaughter for killing John McComas 52 of Dayton. Louise McComas 13 testified about alleged ok treatment. Wiegner denied any intimate relations and claimed the shooting was an accident while hunting squirrels.
Former Gov. Frank Lausche charges the Herbert administration with excessive state spending. In a radio interview, he cites payroll outlays rising from 45 million in Bricker years to 90 million in Herbert’s first term, urging leaders who can say no to curb requests for funds. He says pressure groups push for more appropriations.
Theodore Brandts aged 36, hotel manager and part owner of the Celina Coin Co, died at Lima Hospital after long illness. He had been in an iron lung and is Mercer County's first polio fatality.
Plans for a nine unit row house on Grand Ave south of Middletown Hospital will go before the Board of Appeals Monday at 7 p.m. The project by Dave Finkelman costs 70000 and would extend 25 feet into a residential A district. The brick building includes private stairs and two story layout with five rooms per unit.
Bermuda endured a three hour hurricane battering with winds over 100 mph causing widespread damage. A survey found destruction heavier than two prior falls storms with thousands of trees uprooted. Power and communications were cut as Bermuda faced total darkness after the storm. The same hurricane also lashed southern Florida and Havana earlier in the week.
Moscow reports Russia 1948 grain crop likely to set an all time high. Deliveries not yet fulfilled but officials say the Soviet state will have more grain than in the pre war years, according to the Moscow News.

Gov. Thomas E. Dewey urged bipartisan action to tackle the housing shortage linking industry labor capital and government at a New York City ground breaking event. He said federal aid could be given to states on a realistic practical basis if needed. President Truman, in Albany, argued Democrats kept the economy strong and blasted Dewey’s stance while a trainside crowd of about 5000 gathered.
The motorship Malibu Inez with 14 aboard is feared lost after sending an SOS during a tropical storm off Cape San Lucas, 800 miles south of San Diego. The Empire State could not locate the vessel, while the Navy's Henry W. Tucker was redirected to port. Captain George Farley made no reply after the distress call.
Xenia report says Mrs Edna Morrison 25 of Osborn died when her car was struck by a switch engine near Osborn. The accident occurred last night and involved a local railroad switch engine. Authorities investigate the fatal crash and identify the victim.
Dancer Vickie Evans 25 must appear with actor Robert Mitchum and two others for trial November 22 on charges of criminal conspiracy and narcotics possession. Mitchum Lila Leeds and Robin Ford were arrested August 31 at a marijuana party at Leeds home. Evans attorney argued no marijuana found on her or seen in her possession but judge ruled evidence sufficient for jury.
In Yokohama an American Army Commission sentenced Farmer Lt. Col. Yoshinari Tanaka to hang for ordering the execution of Brig. Gen. Guy QO Fort and three other Americans on Mindanao Island in the Philippines.

Clark County grand jury indicts Dwight David Tudor 26 of Columbus for first degree murder in the slaying of 14 year old Springfield student Mary Ann Page. Tudor confessed shooting her three times with a .22 rifle Sunday night in a rural school yard. Miss Weaver, Tudor’s fiancée, held without charge and questioned jurisdiction. Tudor to be arraigned soon. Weaver case fate pending Franklin County authorities. Tudor reportedly has wartime injuries and prior hospital treatment.
Barbara Ford, daughter of John Ford, filed an amended complaint alleging she was a kissless bride whom Robert Walker married for convenience. She says Walker had no intention to consummate the marriage and to fulfill husbandly duties after they wed July 8 and separated August 14.
Argentine Foreign Minister Juan Bramuglia holds talks with Andrei Vishinsky in Moscow to craft a plan addressing Berlin tensions. Bramuglia, president of the Council, seeks a compromise acceptable to both Soviet and western powers with support from five neutral Security Council governments.
The report notes Norway and Cuba won on the first ballot while Egypt and Turkey required four ballots to determine the winner.
John A. Bender, 59, a retired contractor turned religious motto writer, ended his death fast following police warning it could be illegal to starve. He ate his first meal after declining health and prior to Friday, weighing 156 pounds at start and 145 pounds the day before. He cited world peace discouragement and public dishonesty as motives.
William John Granata 42, a circuit court clerk candidate and brother of State Sen. Peter C. Granata, was found dying on a Loop street. Police labeled it murder and an autopsy cited two deep wounds likely caused by an ax or meat cleaver. He died at Henrotin Hospital.
A resolution recognizing E. T. Gardner for 25 years on the Middletown Civic Association board was adopted at the Manchester Hotel. Gardner retired from the executive committee and is noted for founding the Butler County Come ry Club, hospital funding drives, and leadership in Garde ner-Richardson. He led multiple firms since 1899 including Gardner Paper and Gardner-Harvey, with a 1917 consolidation forming the Gardner interests.
