NRA Seeks Four Million for Gun Rights Campaign

Harlan B. Carter of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action told the House Judiciary subcommittee on crime that the group plans four million dollars for fund raising and opposes all gun control measures. Subcommittee chair John Conyers Jr. pressed Carter as he read a fundraising letter warning about taking guns from police. Carter said the original solicitor had moved to another job and vowed fundraising would become more sophisticated.

Wholesale price index rises in September despite farm price surge

The Labor Department reported a six tenths of one percent rise in the U S wholesale price index in September. Farm goods led the gains with a 4 3 percent increase while industrial commodities rose seven tenths percent the largest since November.

Hurricane Gladys, moving northeast at 20 mph, shifts away from the North Carolina Outer Banks. Gale winds extend 125 miles from the center, easing coast threat but rough seas and heavy swells may erode beaches. Tides 2 to 3 feet above normal expected in Pamlico Sound.

Man dies after choosing no dialysis in California

Chuck McCracken of Loma Linda, 37, died from kidney failure after opting to stop twice weekly dialysis on July 22. He lived over two months without the treatment, remaining conscious until minutes before death as family and friends, including ham radio peers, recalled his struggle and faith.

Evanston Man Survives 14 Story Plunge

Keith Tenny, 30, of Evanston, fell 14 stories from a Continental Illinois Bank & Trust Co window onto a parked car in Chicago. He sustained multiple lacerations and fractures, was freed from wreckage, and later moved to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition after surgery.

Derailment injures score as train derails in Tennessee

In Pulaski, Amtrak and Louisville & Nashville officials comb a 200 yard torn track section seeking cause of derailment that injured at least 35 people. One seriously hurt and no deaths reported. Twenty seven injured from the Chicago to Florida Floridian remained in six hospitals overnight. Eight were treated and released.
