The United States crime rate continues to climb but at a slower pace, according to fresh FBI statistics. The report indicates an ongoing upward trend after about two years of increases, signaling a deceleration in the growth of crime nationwide.
For six months of 1975 Middletown reports total crime matching FBI data for U S cities with 50 000 to 100 000 population. Violent crime rose 3 percent locally while nationwide it climbed 17 percent. Burglary up 37 percent locally, thefts down 4 percent, and regionally crime trends vary across regions. Local August figures rise from 1974 but dipping from prior month.
In Mason Ohio a nine month old trained lion named Bwana grabbed 13 month old Meredith McDevitt in a bank lobby. The girl escaped unhurt after handler Steve Clark restrained the animal whose claws had been removed. Clark took Bwana back to Kings Island. public appearances may end.

Forecasters expect slow forward motion, potential northward turn, and no strengthening, with showers and mid-40s lows in Middletown tonight and a near 60s high Thursday.
