President Nixon may decide on imposing gasoline rationing or higher taxes. An energy group meeting signals nearing a decision with rationing favored by officials, while a large tax increase faces likely congressional opposition. Nixon has long opposed peacetime rationing, calling it unpopular and giving power to administrators.
Governor Gilligan orders 1000 voluntary speed signs and 17 state vehicles to appear on Ohio interstates and state routes this weekend to urge motorists to slow to 50 mph and conserve fuel amid a gasoline shortage. Activation of a special state program follows.
Experts warn heating oil will cost more this winter despite lower thermostat settings. Prices rose over 25 percent in parts of the U S with monthly increases noted nationwide. Government scientists from NIAID report discovery of a virus-like particle linked to infectious hepatitis also called yellow jaundice. They found the particles in preserved stool from Joliet prison volunteers and aim to isolate and grow them for vaccine development.
Weather outlook shows partly cloudy skies with tonight’s low in the low 30s to mid 30s in Middletown. Saturday will be 40s with a high near 60 expected Sunday as highs reach in the low 60s and overnight lows in the 40s.
