Weather forecasters foresee warmer winter easing heating oil shortage

Inferno Like Fire Kills 107 in Kumamoto Department Store

A seven story Taiyo department store in Kumamoto Japan burned with at least 107 dead and 100 injured. Survivors described a chaotic inferno with heavy smoke. Firefighters rescued many from upper floors using ladders and ropes. Authorities investigated the blaze's cause as the store was unusually open for year end shopping.

Middle East ceasefire talks collapse under gunfire

Israeli and Egyptian ceasefire negotiators broke off discussions as machine gun and mortar fire erupted near Kilometer 101 on the Cairo Suez road. Israeli Maj. Gen. Aharon Yariv and Egyptian Maj. Gen. Mohamed el-Gamasy met in a UN tent while Brezhnev warned of a potential larger conflict if peace is not soon reached.

Want ad changes begin Saturday

The Journal will remove male and female classifications from employment headings in want ads starting Saturday. This follows an Ohio Civil Rights Commission advisory on sex discrimination and aligns with a state deadline of December 18. Jobs for Men and Jobs for Women listings will disappear, with all ads moved to Help Wanted.

White House lawyer Buzhardt hazy on dates in Watergate tapes case

J Fred Buzhardt testified under oath about memory gaps from 16 hour days while handling Watergate tapes. He could not recall who first mentioned a blank section on a subpoenaed tape or when conversations occurred. Officials said there are substantial periods with no identifiable sound but no other 18 minute gaps beyond the June 20 tape.

Ohio to set up first lottery with five member panel
