Palestinian hijackers freed 13 captives while holding 27 aboard a British Airways jet in Tunis. German banker Werner Kehl was killed in view of spectators as negotiations continued by radio from the airport tower.
W. J. Usery Jr the FMCS chief urged the United Mine Workers and coal industry to meet at 10 a.m. EST Sunday to resolve the nationwide strike. He cited the mounting toll on the nation and sent telegrams to UMW president Arnold Miller and BCOA chair Nick Camicia.
Ford and Brezhnev showed progress on a 10 year treaty limit on offensive nuclear weapons. Kissinger said they are in the same general ballpark and answered questions after more than six hours of talks in Vladivostok. The summit aimed to set guidelines for Geneva negotiations ahead of a 1977 expiration.
