Paris AP reports Charles de Gaulle rejects devaluation, vows to defend the franc using gold and international aid. Allies express shock as Paris prepares austerity moves, export controls, and possible wage freezes to halt capital outflow and stabilize the currency.
A Japan Air Lines DC8 carrying 96 passengers and 11 crew landed in San Francisco Bay after fog caused a misjudged touch down short of the runway. Six children cried as adults remained calm. crews evacuated 100 tons of aircraft using five rafts. Salvage teams warned the 8.3 million jet could be ruined if not raised within 24 hours.
The Youngstown Ohio school district will close next Wednesday with more than 27 000 students home for a five week break. Banks have loaned 1 5 million since August but state law caps borrowing until after Jan 1. The shutdown could jeopardize the 1969 70 term and tax rates have not risen in five years despite six rejected levies.

Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower will marry on Sunday December 22 at Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan as a private ceremony. The couple both aged 20 and a Plaza Hotel reception for family and close friends will follow the service conducted by Rev Norman Vincent Peale.
