GM labor deal inflates costs by $5.8 billion

GM officials labeled the tentative UAW contract inflationary saying it will lift labor costs by about 5.8 billion dollars and raise the average hourly wage by roughly 3.75, pushing total hourly labor costs above 15 dollars by 1979. The three year agreement ends the industry’s shortest strike as 390000 GM hourly workers return to work after an all night bargaining session.

Fire Arson Suspected In Occidental Tower Blaze Downtown Los Angeles

An early Friday blaze on the 20th floor of Occidental Tower was ruled arson. Investigators found flammable fluids in a sub basement of another complex building, with leads toward suspects. About 300 firefighters battled the first fire for over two hours, 1.5 million dollars in damage, 10 offices destroyed, 25 damaged. 4,800 people work in the complex.

Emoff murderer sentenced to death in Ohio

Albert Lee Scott Jr. was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the kidnapping murder of Dayton businessman Lester C. Emoff. Judge Stanley C. Phillips ruled no mitigating factors warranted delaying the sentence. An appeal must be filed within 30 days.
