Smallest October price rise since March hints easing inflation

U S consumer prices rose three tenths of a percent in October the smallest monthly gain in seven months. The report shows a 5.3 percent annual rise and notes rising worker purchasing power while wholesale prices continue to climb without yet affecting retail costs. Alan Greenspan cautioned there is no evidence of a new inflation surge.

Chinese Nuclear Cloud Nears U.S. Watershed

An air mass carrying radioactive debris from a Chinese nuclear explosion moves eastward toward the United States. The EPA warned on Thursday it cannot forecast the possible ground level radiation dose expected to reach the northwestern states by Saturday.

Flights to Beirut resumes after five months closure

Jubilant crowds along Beirut's seafront welcomed the first commercial airliners back at the international airport since a rocket destroyed an Air Lebanon 707 last June. Middle East Airlines carried two employees, then a second Boeing 707 from Saudi Arabia with 22 passengers and 16 crew. Tanks and antiaircraft guns ring the airport, now under Arab League peacekeeping guard.

UAW Strikes 16 GM Plants in National Labor Action

About 80 000 UAW members walked out at 16 General Motors plants as midnight deadline passed. Negotiators say talks were close though six main issues remain unresolved including unemployment benefits and unionization at southern plants. The strike could cripple GM’s 21 state production network within a week.

UAW Targets 3 GM Plants in Ohio Walkout

The United Auto Workers began a selective mini-strike at 12:01 am EST Friday against 16 GM plants including Fisher Body facilities in Cleveland Mansfield and Hamilton Ohio. Ohio totals include about 49,500 GM workers with Fisher Body Cleveland 2250 Mansfield 2450 and Hamilton 2285 employees.

Wayne Local schools offered interest free loans to staff

Waynesville National Bank proposed interest free loans to Wayne Local School District employees who would temporarily forego pay. The move depends on all staff signing waivers to keep schools open as the district faces a 73 000 shortfall and a Nov 29 closing date per the state auditor.
