In the worst weather of the year, the 472-foot lumber carrier Carnelian-1 sank 1,400 miles northwest of Honolulu. Crewmen clung to logs and lifeboats while rescuers aboard the Hunter and the Wisteria, aided by a circling Air Force plane, evacuated six and others fled on rubber rafts. The Coast Guard planned to reach the scene by Saturday as seas remained perilous and cargo shifted on the Hunter.
