Ohio ends election day registration in most counties

Ohio voters in 22 counties must register 30 days before elections after Issue 1 repealed instant sign up. In 16 counties without formal procedures many kept the prior rule, but those who signed Tuesday or used polling place forms are registered. Ohio school levies ease financial crunch in many districts

Voters in 15 of 20 financially distressed Ohio districts approved operating levies, reopening closed schools and preventing shutdowns. Notable wins included Toledo and Nelsonville York districts, while several others narrowly passed or failed with varying millage figures across multiple counties.

Ohio repeals instant registration amid four constitutional issues

Ohio voters repealed instant voter registration by wide margins and defeated a leghold trap ban in an off year election. Four proposed constitutional amendments were decisively rejected by 3.1 million voters with Issue 2, the trap ban, losing 1,992,602 to 1,151,765. Issues 3 and 4 on housing and bonding failed as well.

Butler County Voters Back Issue 1 Repeal High Turnout

Butler County turnout neared 60,000 with about 59 554 ballots cast amid statewide acceptance of Issue 1 the repeal of election day registration. County levies for mental retardation fire safety and vocational school passed while Warren County voters backed school bonds and local charters. Municipal races in Germantown and Springboro elected new leaders.

Young Democrats win mayor races in Cleveland and Toledo

In Ohio, Cleveland selects 31 year old Dennis Kucinich over state Rep. Edward Feighan by 3 069 votes. Toledo picks City Councilman Doug DeGood 30 over Lucas County Commissioner Max C Reddish 61 by 2 962 votes. Other cities choose incumbents and younger leaders.

Charter-Democratic coalition maintains control in Cincinnati

The Charter-Democratic coalition expanded its City Council majority to 7-2 over Republicans. Top vote getters were Gerald Springer 76077, Robbie Sterne 67456, Mayor James Luken 66427, and others including Charterites Brush and Blackwell with 54573 and 51503 respectively.

Akron voters reject third attempt at alternative county government

Summit County voters rejected the proposed alternative government plan for the third time with 71,883 voting against and 67,981 in favor. The measure would have created either an elected or appointed county executive and a county council while keeping current officials in place.
