Three weeks after its unveiling President Ford’s anti inflation program is stalled in public dispute over whether its costs outweigh benefits. Only housing help has cleared Congress while budget cuts and a 5 percent surtax stall amid fears they could worsen economic decline.
The government reports the U.S. unemployment rate climbed from 5.8 to 6 percent last month, marking the highest level in three years. The rise highlights deteriorating labor conditions as joblessness increases across sectors.
