Official campaign finance reports show the Republican National Committee ending with a surplus as of Oct 15, having raised 1 356 216 and spent 1 214 763. The Democratic committee showed 960 134 collected and 1 031 669 spent. Both reports are filed under the 1925 corrupt practices law.
A coal train for Maust Coal and Coke Co narrowly avoided an explosion when a dynamite booby trap under the Baltimore and Ohio tracks failed to detonate. Cpl. C. G. McClain said the fuse had been lit but went out as the train passed. The crew discovered the device after noting dirt and rocks on the rails.
Indianapolis mourns Wilbur Shaw, 51, three time winner of the Memorial Day 500, killed in a Decatur plane crash with Ernest Roose and Ray Grimes. In Columbus Ohio Secretary Ted W Brown says he stands by an estimated 2 750 000 voters for Tuesday election despite rising voter interest from recent campaigning and an Eisenhower Ohio visit The main races are Republican George H Bender vs Democratic Thomas A Burke for the U S Senate and Democratic Gov Frank J Lausche vs Republican James A Rhodes for the governorship Lausche favored to win a fifth term while Burke and Bender face a tight contest for Tafts last two years in the Senate seat
In Havana, Fulgencio Batista ran unopposed as Ramon Grau San Martin quit the race after the Superior Electoral tribunal denied a delay. Grau called the election a farce while Batista urged a boycott and pledged a peaceful, lawful ballot under tight security with around 20,000 guards at polling sites.
Cincinnati authorities resumed bird control using shotgun fire to deter starlings. Eight marksmen on two downtown rooftops reported bagging 200 to 300 birds despite earlier failed tactics such as tinsel, stuffed owls, and phonograph records.
Cleveland reports private detectives guard the Chagrin Falls estate of Congressman George H. Bender. Two sticks of dynamite were found in his automobile, detonator cap exploded, burned paper noted. Bender, head of a House sub committee on labor abuses, calls it an intimidation attempt.
Ohio utility crews from Akron Canton and Toledo aided Cleveland Electric Illuminating and others after a weekend storm that cut power to about 7000 homes. Bay Village schools closed affecting 2100 students as repairs exceeded heat needs. Over 200 traffic accidents were logged. Weather varied from 1.5 inches at the lakefront airport to a foot in Chardon.
Twenty Italian Alpine troopers join American and Italian teams near the French Italian border to recover the bodies of 21 men killed in the US Air Force plane crash high above Entraque Italy. The operation aims to locate all remains and identify those lost in the mountainous incident.
In Cleveland AP report the Sam Sheppard murder trial faces a possible mistrial over juror No. 6 James R. Manning a real estate agent accused of a morals offense 11 years ago. Prosecutor Mahon seeks to unseat him for potentially lying about witnesses, risking restart of the trial for the July 4 slaying. Manning’s spouse argues he will attend today, while defense insists legal avenues to remove him are unclear.
In Augusta Ga 2nd Lt Charles C Anderson formerly of St Louis is held under pretrial investigation for ordering trainees to hang a fellow recruit by the ankles from a tree and endure humiliating exercises The Third Army says Anderson who served in Korea and was commanding Company A 1st Infantry Training Regiment on his first officer assignment ordered recruits to perform sand baths scrub with sand and water shout obscene phrases and perform exhausting pushups and squat jumps while others dumped dirt over a bound trainee The army will decide next steps including possible court martial after the investigation finishes.
In predawn antisubmarine exercises off Norfolk four ships sustained extensive damage. The destroyer Norris rammed the Bergall submarine at 3:32 a.m. and later the English and W. L. Lind collided at 5 a.m. during Operation Landflex, involving over 200 ships. No serious injuries were reported.
The Peiping radio announced a June 1953 census putting China's population at 601,930,000, a figure far above prior estimates. It excludes Formosa and some border areas yet includes overseas Chinese, highlighting a population nearly one fourth of humanity and dwarfing India and the United States.
In Stratford England two mothers Vera Bowers and Sheila Read who initially refused to swap their 5 week old babies after hospital blood tests confirmed a mix up finally agreed to exchange the infants on a trial basis. A four engine Navy transport with 42 aboard including two officers spouses and five children is presumed lost between the United States and the Azores. The plane took off from Patuxent River Md and was last heard at 11 p.m. Saturday about 300 miles at sea. The missing crew included 21 Navy personnel and 21 passengers with one family aboard Lt Gilbert Jacobsen 25 of Brooklyn his wife Ida 24 and their 2 year old twins. The search involved carriers destroyers transports Coast Guard cutters and hundreds of planes across a 120 mile band from the U S Eastern Seaboard toward the Azores.
In Lexington Park Md a dozen or so wives gathered awaiting news about their missing husbands from a Navy flight crew of 42 aboard a Super-Constellation bound from Patuxent Naval Air Test Center to the Azores. Cmdr L W Meachum led chaplains in calling next of kin while neighbors offered support. Wives expressed faith and calm despite worry and grief as more details awaited from officials.
