Boredom and glamour mix aboard Oriana at sea
Vancouver report profiles Mike Robbins entertainment director of the P and O liner Oriana. He describes long cruises, lavish pay and servants, while coping with fatigue and demand from 1,500 passengers. The ship, on Vancouver stop, represents the twilight of an era as cruisers grow larger and market shifts away from older liners. Around 1,500 passengers endure six week passages as Robbins guards their mood with 20 minute cabaret sets. He notes his wife and five children at home and the toll of life at sea.
