The United States faces a growing gasoline shortage as demand climbs and crude supply tightens. Stations cut hours and ration fuel while independents offer cheaper gas. officials warn many stations may close or limit sales during the summer driving season.
Skylab astronauts aim six telescopes at the sun to study solar control of the solar system and to explore controlled thermonuclear fusion as a potential earth power source. The $107 million array was checked out as the crew began a 28 day orbital mission with medical tests and in cabin life experiments continuing amid cooling efforts.
Stephen A. Wakefield assistant secretary of the interior for energy and minerals told the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association that rising oil imports threaten the dollar over the next decade. He urged increased domestic onshore production and better recovery rates to cut import payments and support balance of payments.
