Dayton police captured a 32 year old man after a downtown holdup and high speed chase. John Nelson of Dayton surrendered at a tavern after abandoning a bullet pierced car and fleeing through back yards.
Dorothy Lawlor a 28 year old divorcee in Hempstead Newsday offers to marry the man who provides $10,000 cash to support her and her two children. She has 14 responses by telephone but will visit applicants at a Long Island nightclub and must decide within a week. Her demand: a $10,000 settlement plus substantial money beyond that.
Sixteen freight cars derailed on the New York Central line just east of Huron blocking the main Cleveland Chicago route. No injuries reported. Traffic detoured via the old Norwalk Division. two mainline tracks to reopen around 2 p.m. A coal car axle break caused the accident. Three hundred workers were summoned from Cleveland and nearby yards to assist.
Karl S. Smith, 45, of Huntington West Virginia, wounded four times by machinegun fire while with three others near the dividing line between the Russian and American zones in Korea. He was flown to a base hospital in good condition. Dr P O Chough of the national police said the shots came from the Russian zone.
Betty Bruce Henry sues Borah Minevitch in a Los Angeles superior court for divorce citing cruel treatment. The case names the harmonica virtuoso and the former stage actress as parties to the action filed yesterday.
New Jersey Republican delegates, after screening Dewey Taft and Stassen, favored Senator Arthur Vandenberg for the presidential nomination. The shift followed a closed dinner with Governor Thomas E. Dewey addressing the gathering.
Senators angrily pressed the State Department for a full story on Voice of America programs they call sabotaging and libelous. They demanded probes led by Senator Capehart in the Senate and Rep. Chenoweth in the House, citing scripts mocking states and groups.

In Scranton Pennsylvania rescue teams frantically dug 200 feet underground after shouts from a cavern revived hope that two men, Anthony Brezak and Julius Pitarra, might be alive following a rock fall at Heidelberg colliery No 11 shaft. The body of William Ambrose was recovered, a 53 year old Avoca resident. Brezak, 34, of Avoca, is believed alive though seriously hurt. Pitarra, 27, of Dupont, whereabouts unknown.
The Senate Finance Committee approved 12 to 0 a House passed bill to repeal the quarter cent per pound tax on uncolored oleo and the 10 cent per pound tax on colored margarine. The measure would end makers licenses and set fees up to 600 dollars yearly.
The United States dismissed Soviet protests claiming American planes interfered with Soviet shipping near Japan. The State Department said no evidence supported the allegations in over 50 cases and the reply was delivered to Moscow on Tuesday.
Rep. Clarence Brown of Ohio said Taft captured 30 of Texas 33 Republican presidential votes, surprising even his backers who expected a strong Texas showing for rival candidates after delegates were chosen Tuesday.

In Warsaw Poland and France signed a five year trade accord. France will supply Poland with 60 million dollars worth of motor cars machinery and other goods and Poland will pay with coal.
A young bandit robbed the Merchants Finance Company in Hamilton around 1 pm today and handcuffed the woman cashier to a floor staple, escaping with about 300 dollars. Police freed the cashier about a half hour later. no further details on the suspect.
The fast thinning Grand Army of the Republic ranks will number under three score on Memorial Day with 52 known Union veterans alive as of May 26. The youngest is 97, James Cragom of Chicago, and the oldest, Albert Hard of Rochester, N Y, will be 106 next July 15. Ohio pensioners include John R Bennett 103 Waynesfield Daniel Clingaman 101 Wauseon John Crate 102 Atwater and Alvin Smith 103 Youngstown.
Floodwaters lapped over dikes and flooded several trailer camps in the Richland Pasco Kennewick area as rivers reached flood stage. Shelters and government trailer camps filled quickly with evacuees, with estimates of those displaced ranging from 5,000 to 20,000. Many residents from Hanford workers fled to safety as the Yakima and Columbia rivers stayed at flood levels.
Herb Roth, one of the nation’s leading harness race drivers, died from head injuries suffered in a sixth race accident at Hamburg raceway near Buffalo. The 54 year old from Allentown Pennsylvania was nicknamed The Flying Dutchman for his daring driving after twenty years in the sport.
Detroit driver George Witzman aged 32 died in Akron city hospital after a midget car crash at the Rubber Bowl. He suffered skull fracture spinal injuries and a broken arm when the steering gear locked during a warm up causing the vehicle to vault a fence. A rescuer was burned slightly removing him from the wreckage.
Prague officials reject a foreign dispatch claiming President Eduard Benes is gravely ill. An information ministry spokesman says the 64 year old walked with his wife at their country home and appeared in good spirits.
A 24 day coal miners strike in Coshocton County prompted a Common Pleas Court injunction by Judge Lloyd S. Leech affecting six large mines with 290 to 750 tons daily output. The order bars two UMW organizers John Graham Ira Nelson and 31 members from interfering with miners returning to work pending a June 18 hearing. About 200 to 350 miners reportedly sought UMW representation amid ongoing state wide union drives.

Columbus police arrest Ulysses Smith of Cincinnati after a prowler exchange ends with a pistol misfire and a subsequent shootout. Officer Dwight W. Joseph fired six rounds at the suspect’s car, wrestled him to subdue, and booked him for investigation.
Canton Ohio AP report says James Shortland 10 and John T McCance 15 drowned after McCance tried to teach rescue techniques in a water-filled strip mine. Two other boys watched as fear and excitement prevented any rescue attempt.
