A coalition of 20 railroad unions urged the government to ready a transfer of railroad ownership from private interests. They condemned government seizure on May 10 and called for the state to assume full operation responsibilities amid ongoing labor disputes.
Former Ohio governor Frank Lausche urged a mass de urbanization to solve city problems saying return to the soil reduces urban strain. On Town Hall he blamed population growth for urban ills and noted cities lack postwar revenues. McCarthy Humphrey Armstrong joined panel advocating housing code standardization and modernization of archaic rules.
Sacha Guitry, famed writer director and actor, was taken by unknown individuals from a film premiere to Lyon's central square where he was forced to kneel hatless for a staged photo at a wartime memorial site. The incident followed protests by leftist groups over his latest film The Comedian and his wartime conduct.
Henry A. Wallace's third party will appear on Utah's November ballot. Cordon Hoxie, chairman of the Wallace for President Committee of Utah, filed petitions with the secretary of state containing 1,688 names, surpassing the 500 required.
The House Appropriations Committee charged that the U S public power program uses Soviet style methods in selling Bonneville power to a public utility district that took over a private company via condemnation without a vote. The panel cut Interior Department funding by 84 million dollars from the president's estimate and urged preference for current power purchasers.
Washington AP Republicans won the first major test for their tariff bill as the House voted to bar amendments. The two votes total 212 156 and 196 166 showing a split on the no amendments rule with some Republicans joining Democrats. House must take the bill as is or reject it.

Jacob Chamberlain announced a petition filed with the National Labor Relations Board to decertify the CIO as the bargaining agent at Prior Products. The U SW CSO was certified less than a year ago and contract runs to June 30. an NLRB election will be held if the petition is granted.
William Andrews aged 33 died in a Toledo Hospital from injuries suffered Friday when crushed between two trucks at a Fremont service station.
President Juho Paasikivi reshuffled Finland’s cabinet appointing Eino Kilpi as interior minister and Lennart Heljas as education minister while Hertta Kuusinen became vice minister for social affairs. Strikes over the dismissal of interior minister Yrjo Leino paralyzed docks and heavy industry with 30,000 to 100,000 workers walking out.
Negotiations resume between Chrysler and United Auto Workers to end the 15 day strike by 75,000 workers. Gov Sigler pushed talks but did not attend. GM reaches a history making deal that could steer industry wage talks and set a date for ratification May 29.
The Senate and House Judiciary Committee work toward reconciling a 34.9 million dollar gap to fund federal farm programs. The Senate bill totals 1.13 billion for the Agriculture Department for the year starting July, with most in direct appropriations and loan authorizations. The school lunch fund faces a 75 million dollar allocation, 10 million more than the House, while a proposed soil conservation payment formula was rejected 42-38.
Robert H. Johnson, 57, general manager of the New York Daily Mirror and Hearst veteran of 27 years, died after a heart attack at a restaurant. He visited his office yesterday and appeared well. he lived with his wife Ann and recently moved to a Long Beach summer home.

Cincinnati AP a strangling case and a carbon monoxide suicide involved Clara Katsetos and Paul Klein, with police calling it murder and death by own action.
The Statue of Liberty will receive a half million dollar beautification funded by the House Appropriations Committee. The plan includes cleaning Belloose Island in New York harbor and installing a heating plant inside the statue for winter visitors.
Unofficial Florida returns from 1,464 of 1,530 precincts show 43 year old Jacksonville attorney Fuller Warren leading Dan McCarty by votes 284067 to 270647. Warren overcame an early deficit to win the Democratic runoff for governor.
The U S cruiser Salt Lake City fell after five hours of bombardment by 15 ships and many planes off the southern California coast. Two torpedoes at 1:52 p.m. sank the veteran warship, which went down bow first into 2000 fathoms. Adm C D Ramsey and Rear Adm Bertram Rogers commented on the sinking and its somber symbolism.
Washington AP reports signs of a convention deadlock as Harold E. Stassen and rivals Dewey and Taft fight for delegate strength. Stassen claims lead in first and second choice support, despite Oregon defeat, with nine of twelve Oregon delegates pledged to Dewey before the switch. Texas Republicans split votes with Taft leading, Dewey minor, Stassen minor.
Frank L. Skeldon, 64, longtime business editor of the Toledo Blade, died after a year of illness. He began in 1899 as an office boy at the Toledo Bee and later served as reporter Marine editor and city editor at the News-Bee before joining the Blade. He earned a noted Titanic scoop by meeting the Carpathia and relaying details to New York, beating rivals by an hour.
