Democrats seek to shield Medicaid amid Ohio budget talks

Ohio lawmakers debate a $138.5 million supplemental bill to fund welfare programs, with Finance Chairman Myrl Shoemaker proposing to reserve $47 million of the Department of Welfare’s $128.5 million for Medicaid. He cautions the move may merely delay the problem into the next fiscal year. Disputes arise as other agencies push to avoid cuts to preserve Medicaid funding, while Governor Rhodes’ administration aims at about $40 million in savings from across the board cuts and program reductions to cover Medicaid costs.
