Evaporating Democratic Split Faces Texas Convention
Texas Democrats incline toward moderation as Gov. Allen Shivers refrains from challenging May 5 balloting. Delegation to Chicago will align with Johnson and Rayburn on party platform, signaling a decline of deep southern split similar to 1948 and 1952 patterns. Eisenhower still welcomed in Waco May 25, but Texas eyes no 24 electoral votes for November.

Senate Hearings Focus on Premerger Notice Bills
Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearings Wednesday examine several merger control bills led by HR 424 now in the House. The measure would require 90 days advance notice to the Attorney General for mergers above 10 million dollars, enabling DOJ advisory opinions and potential court action to block monopolies. President Eisenhower urged the change in his Economic Report. Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, a former House antitrust chief, drives discussion, linking past Kefauver Celler efforts and criticism of the 1955 Attorney General antitrust study for not proposing tighter merger curbs.

Mountain Man and His Loyal Dog Tale in the Mountains
Hal Boyle recalls a mountain man who valued his coon dog Trixie above his son. The elderly hunter, near 80, sells his dogs to stay faithful to hunting. Give Yourself Away A Political Racket Flashback
Congress and staff unearthed a high pressure lobbying giveaway as postcards meant for Potter and McNamara reveal the same campaign text. The item exposes misaligned goals since dozens of social security bills exist alongside Potter's own liberal plan. The exchange on the Passamaquoddy Project shows miscoordination between Evins Fleming and Itschner over budget placement and study status.

Dewey as a factor in New York politics and patronage
George Sokolsky argues that politics centers on patronage and organization more than philosophy. He notes Dewey's enduring grip on federal patronage, the friction with Eisenhower operatives, and the unlikely path for Dewey to Senate or VP roles amid New York Republican divisions and Democratic strength.
