Sixteen civil defense experts witnessing today’s hydrogen bomb blast said they were not dismayed by the sight noting the awe inspiring explosion. They urged increased civil preparedness to strengthen the weakest link in total defense and protect civilians and industry against such weapons.
The Associated Press reports 37 Ohioans died in weekend incidents, with 33 in traffic. A train car collision in Elyria caused eight fatalities, while incidents near Newcomerstown Kenton Cleveland Cadiz and fires in Cleveland and drownings while fishing added to the toll.
Albert Woolson 109 year old Civil War veteran and last surviving Union Army member was reported in satisfactory condition at St Lukes Hospital Duluth after a Saturday admission for recurring lung congestion. Attendants noted his condition remained unchanged from Sunday.
The Supreme Court unanimously rules against applying state right-to-work laws to railroad industry, striking down the measure as applied. The decision centers on federal preemption and industry regulation, affecting labor relations and union activities nationwide.

AKRON Ohio Two trusties walked away from Summit County Jail. They stole a car and crashed into another vehicle on Ohio 8 south of Greentown. Officials identified the escapees as James Henry Dobbs 20 and Cherles Dempsie 25, both of Crow.
Ex President Harry Truman and Mrs Truman met Pope Pius XII and received a gold medal of the pontificate. Truman spoke of the visit as most pleasant and satisfactory and praised U S diplomacy with the Vatican. He praised the foreign service morale and noted the embassy marine guard. Italy's President Gronchi hosted a luncheon for the Trumans at the Quirinale Palace.
The Senate opens debate on a large housing bill aimed at aiding the poor and aged with a major low rent program for 135,000 units yearly for three years and options to adjust totals. A special elderly housing design for 75,000 units is included, with stairless homes and safety features. The bill adds liberal FHA loan terms for buyers aged 60 or older.

Eight Akron residents died when a New York Central Pace maker passenger train hit their automobile on the west edge of Elyria. The victims were Millard C. The car failed to stop as the 70 to 75 mph train approached on a four track crossing lacking signals. Deputy Sheriff Lloyd Seckt noted wreckage stretched about a half mile. The crash follows a downgrade at a crossing without flashing devices or bells.

Cincinnati police seek an unidentified youth in the strangulation death of five year old Richard Townson found in a gaslit downtown alley with a belt around his throat. The child was last seen playing near home with an older red headed boy several hours earlier. Lt. Col. Henry Sandman led the probe as night hampered the search. Mrs. Jean Richardson reported the body and the mother, Mrs. Clarence Townson, said the boy was missing at discovery time. Coroner Dr. Herbert Lyle Hamilton ruled strangulation.
An explosion and fire leveled the Henry Automotive Parts Co building near U S 6 on Fremonts western edge early today. Damage is estimated around 100000 dollars with no injuries reported.
