The FTC announced five guides on endorsements with two effective today. Experts and organizations must show homework and fair consideration. Three other guides pending public comment limit layman drug testimonials and disclose material connections with endorsers.
The Ford administration plans to begin resettling about 45,000 Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees in the United States under a $405 million bill. Nine private agencies will move refugees from bases in California Arkansas Florida and Pennsylvania. The defense department will open Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania to handle 15,000 to 16,000, with Eglin Florida phasing out. An advisory committee of 17 led by John Eisenhower will aid on resettlement health and welfare. Transportation for some refugees homeward will be arranged by UNHCR the Red Cross or ICM and funded by those groups.
Cambodian naval crew says it seized the freighter Mayaguez and mutinied against a Communist captain before sailing to Thailand to seek asylum. Thailand detains 10 crew on a gunboat. U.S. officials report revised Mayaguez casualties 5 dead, 16 missing, 49 wounded. debates over totals continue.
The father of 2nd Lt. Richard Vandegeer says the Mayaguez rescue pilot was “tired” from recent missions. Vandegeer, 27, was a helicopter rescue pilot who evacuated from Phnom Penh and Saigon and flew South Vietnamese aircraft. He was on his second tour and was shot down. His father, a retired Army major, lives alone in Buckland after moving from Holyoke.
Walter Williams III of Raleigh was found guilty of taping over North Carolina's "First in Freedom" plate slogan and speeding. The case spurs an appeal backed by the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union, citing free speech protections and referencing an April 14 opinion by Attorney General Rufus Edmisten suggesting dismissals in similar cases.
Violent thunderstorms sparked by a spring heat wave injure more than 50 people from Oklahoma to Minnesota and cause millions in damage. The West flakes with heavy snow warnings as warm temps fade amid storms. in Minnesota a Mounds View trailer park suffers extensive damage with 30 plus injured, and Lawton Oklahoma reports nursing home injuries as roofs lift.
