In Lucasville Ohio three inmates escaped from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility late Sunday as guards protested state policy with pickets outside the institution.
The U S Senate prepares a wide debate on defense and foreign policy tied to a 30 3 billion weapons bill while a vote looms on lifting Turkey military aid cut since February over Cyprus. House votes on amendments to cut weapons systems and troop levels as unions strike at Marion Correctional Institution over bargaining rules.
A 1974 government report notes declines in deaths from heart disease and stroke and a 13 percent drop in all accident deaths. Motor vehicle deaths fell about 20 percent, aiding a record low overall mortality rate of 21.3 per 100,000. Cancer deaths rose 1.3 percent.
The Mayaguez sailed toward Hong Kong still loaded with cargo for U S forces in Thailand. Owner Sea Land denies Cambodian claims the cargo includes plastic bombs and radio equipment. Captain Miller says 107 containers in Singapore were broken into with about $5 000 stolen from the ship’s safe. The crew, held briefly by Cambodians, were not mistreated and were later freed after U S military action.
Thailand declares the U S letter an acceptable apology over uses of Thai bases in the Mayaguez rescue. Foreign Minister Chatichai Choonhavan says relations improve while demonstrations continue and troops stay set to withdraw over a year. Premier Kukrit Pramoj urges restraint and reviews on bilateral agreements continue.
Defense Secretary Schlesinger disclosed revised casualties from the Koh Tang operation in the Gulf of Thailand. Five dead, 16 missing, and 70 to 80 wounded, with initial Pentagon figures of one dead, 22 wounded, and 13 missing superseded.
Near Portsmouth Ohio a small private plane crashed about a mile from Greater Portsmouth Airport. Two persons were killed and three survived. Authorities said one victim was an adult and the other a child. Two other adults and a second child survived in a muddy field.
Sappers defused a paint can bomb near Jaffa Gate in a crowded Jerusalem area. In Israel and the occupied territories in the past week the 16th bomb incident was reported. An Israeli border patrol killed an Arab slipping through barbed wire on the Lebanon border, with unclear links to terrorism. A separate Arab man died from a grenade explosion as he appeared ready to throw it at students in northern Israel. A 25 year old man posing as a workman was found on the roof of Acre agricultural college after entering the site. In Lebanon nine Arab children died and five others were wounded when a mortar shell exploded in Aiteroun.
Twelve Americans and six foreigners remain in Savannakhet under loose house arrest as student protests press for neutralizing three southeastern provinces and reducing U S presence. The Laotian government restricts travel while Pathet Lao authorities plan talks with officials.
Clear tonight with lows in the 60s. Sunny Tuesday with highs in the 80s. Yesterday's high reached 83 and overnight low 53. Extended outlook includes a chance of showers from Wednesday through Friday.
