In 1968 Gerald Ford as House Minority Leader warned that U S options were very very limited after North Korea seized the Pueblo. He urged avoiding military action once the Pueblo and crew were in North Korean hands while stressing the importance of intelligence missions to national security.
The Mayaguez was fired on and boarded about 55 miles off Cambodia near Poulo Wai and taken to Kompong Som. U S officials said no crew injuries and the Gulf warships could not reach before Wednesday. Congressional voices divided on possible response.
Former Mayaguez crewman John N. Hill, 30, of Mount Prospect, says Cambodian takeover fears seemed minor. United States plans to fly about 1,000 Marines from Okinawa to Utapao Thailand to back President Ford’s warning as the Mayaguez remains at Koh Tang under guard.
Israeli forces crossed the Lebanese border for the second day and abducted three Arabs suspected of collaborating with Palestine guerrillas. In All Around village they searched for terrorists with no bullets fired. Lebanon accuses Israel of mining and raiding to hinder guerrilla incursions.
A Harris poll projects Ronald Reagan and George Wallace pairing to 23 percent, enough to push the election to the House. The survey notes a three way race could unsettle two party dominance, while Kennedy-Glenn lead with 38 percent to Ford-Rockefeller's 30 percent.
More than 100 riot police freed 10 hostages held by about 50 striking workers at United Aircraft in Longueuil Quebec. Police used clubs and tear gas. four officers were injured. Jose Ledoux of a local radio station reported from inside the plant as the siege ended.
Supt. Arnold Jago said 1,519 inmates remained secured by supervisors and volunteers from other shifts. Pickets formed around the maximum security facility last night while Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction in Columbus assessed how many of its 600 workers joined the protest. Joe Ashley, a department spokesman, noted several employees call in for shifts but refuse to cross picket lines.
Clear skies and lows in the mid 40s forecast for the Middletown area tonight with partly cloudy conditions. Yesterday's high reached 72 and overnight low 48. rain totaled .03 inches. Extended outlook calls for showers Thursday, then clearing Friday and fair Saturday.
