Treasury Secretary Connally says Nixon may send Congress a sweeping tax reform bill this year, possibly including a value-added tax. He describes the plan as a basic fundamental proposal rather than loophole closing ideas now on Capitol Hill.
A 27 year old medical technician killed his wife and four children, wounded a daughter, and killed himself in a Kansas City home. The mother, 28, was also stabbed. a 10 month old died, a 2 year old and a 6 year old were found dead, and Patricia 9 was wounded. Firemen found six shot heads, with the suicide survivor asking for help. The killer reportedly fled after failing to appear at his brother’s office.
Tonight remains fair and milder with lows in the mid 40s. Tomorrow turns increasingly cloudy with highs in the mid 70s. Yesterday's high reached 63 and the overnight low was 3 percent.
Moscow denounced Nixon's mining of North Vietnamese ports as threatening peace and security. Tass released the official reaction but did not call for delaying or canceling the Nixon Soviet leaders summit set to begin May 22 in Moscow.
Freighters including at least one Soviet flag ship left Haiphong harbor before Nixon’s safe passage deadline. Mines laid by U S planes across entrances to Haiphong and six other North Vietnamese ports are now armed and detonable. Intense U S air and naval bombardment continued against military targets in North Vietnam as the Western Pacific cruiser destroyer force remained on station.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports tabulation mistakes in Cuyahoga County may have erased up to 16,000 votes for U S Senator George McGovern, threatening Hubert Humphrey’s statewide unofficial lead of about 19,000. Errors found during reporting on Wednesday.
Reporters analyzed tally sheets used by poll workers in Ohio Democratic primary. McCarthy alternates listed beside McGovern delegates caused misallocation when perforations were separated. McGovern won more district delegates. Humphrey picked up at large delegates.
Antiw ar demonstrators faced police on streets and campuses in a second day of protest against Nixon mining policy in Vietnam. National Guardsmen patrolled the University of Minnesota armory and a nearby Air Force office while clashes injured officers and protesters and hundreds were arrested nationwide.
Navy Chief Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt said mining of North Vietnamese ports is an act of self defense. He noted that mines activated after a grace period would curb enemy supplies and warned approaching ships would be warned by available means.
