In Kellogg Idaho two miners Ron Flory and Tom Wilkenson were trapped in a fire ravaged sun shine mine. They braided blasting wire to pass the time while awaiting rescue, with Wilkenson noting it helped him cope under the danger.
Vust de Ber and co worker Flory endured 175 hours trapped beneath the surface using air from a pipe and water from a mine cooling system. They were rescued near a cooler 4 800 feet underground as rescue teams pursue more than 40 miners missing after last Tuesday fire.
A U S Army helicopter crash 20 miles northeast of Saigon killed 32 Americans on an administ rative mission. Other losses included a Marine Phantom and an Air Force F4 as U S commands report 64 Americans killed and 62 missing across 36 helicopter and 34 plane losses since March 30. Hanoi claims many planes shot down and damage near Hanoi Haiphong Yen Bai whileSaigon reports extensive daily air strikes into North Vietnam.

The Agriculture Department maintains its 4 percent 1972 grocery price rise forecast despite higher early year food costs. First quarter 1972 grocery prices rose about 5 percent from 1971, with meat price declines easing the bulge. Pork and beef are expected to rise markedly, poultry and eggs modestly, and overall food costs to gain 4.0 to 4.5 percent for the year.
U S war planes shot down seven enemy MIGs today in the deepest and heaviest air strikes inside North Vietnam in over four years, the U S Command announced. The seven MIGs downed in one day set a new record for the Vietnam war.
President Nixon moves to seal North Vietnamese ports with undersea mines, drawing protests from Senate Democrats and threats of impeachment talk in the House. Kissinger cautions the impact on the battlefield may come in weeks as Moscow talks loom. Vilified as aggression by the Soviet ambassador and Tass, the action is described as a short term hardship for Soviet leaders while not yet changing Vietnam fighting for about three weeks.
AP Special Correspondent Hugh A Mulligan describes Da Nang as a temporary refuge for more than 300,000 homeless in central Vietnam. Families travel by boat, truck, and bus through Dong Ha, Cam Le, and Hue, with ruined roads and migrant camps. Some find relative relief with electricity and food, while the city faces unemployment and economic recession as American troop withdrawal continues.
