Supreme Court sidesteps UN law in burial case
The Supreme Court refused 5-3 to rule on whether the United Nations Charter supersedes U.S. law in Mrs. Evelyn Rice’s suit against a Sioux City cemetery for denying burial to her husband Army Sgt. John Rice. The ruling left Iowa’s decision intact and noted no basis for Charter supremacy. Justice Black, in dissent, urged review over equal protection questions under the 14th Amendment.
