An Ohio Air National Guard C47 crashed in Belmont County after engine failure as 15 aboard fought to parachute. Pilot Maj Charles C. Cook stayed with the plane to allow 11 to bail out, one died. Several survivors hospitalized. investigation ordered. The crash near Alledonia involved the rifle team returning from Baltimore to Columbus. crew included Lt. H J Cramer and other guardsmen.

New Delhi filed a strong protest with Pakistan after a weekend clash in disputed Kashmir between Indian troops and Pakistani border police. The defense ministry report says 12 Indians were killed, while Pakistani officials say both sides incurred casualties and the area has returned to normal.
West Germany becomes NATO's 15th member in a ceremony at Palais de Chaillot as Chancellor Konrad Adenauer attends his first public session. The move follows the Bonn government’s accession and outlines plans for a 150,000-strong core army with WEU limits and U.S. military aid.

ATLANTA AP A new outbreak of cable cutting gunplay and dynamite blasts marked Mother’s Day week end developments in two major Southern strikes entering their ninth week. Negotiators met in Washington to end the Louisville & Nashville Railroad strike across 14 states while CIO Communications Workers of America kept its walkout against Southern Bell in nine states. A Southern Bell spokesman called the cable cut of 304 wire pairs between Frankfurt and Louisville the worst since the strike began. A New York to Miami cable near Columbia DC was dynamited Saturday night, with service restored Sunday. Two railroad workers were wounded in unrelated shootings as a guard died and a car carrying a non striking telephone worker was fired on. An agreement later set the Nashville Railroad strike to end at 6 am EST Wednesday. Dynamiting derailed freight trains near Calera Alabama and cut L&N main lines around Birmingham. In Hazard Kentucky Judge Wells denied L&N’s injunction against mass picketing, praising peaceful activity. CWA and railroad officials say members aren’t linked to violence. strikes center on health insurance and a new contract.
Washington reports that the House will decide whether to consider a combined Alaska and Hawaii statehood bill and whether to allow amendments. Supporters cite polling indicating a narrow majority in favor if brought to a vote, while opponents seek to block consideration. If approved, seven hours of debate would precede a final vote, with White House opposition noted.
