In Saigon the Viet Cong attacked from three sides while U S forces claimed to have repelled the southern and eastern drives. About 2,540 enemy killed since the offensive began, with 50,000 homeless and over 2,000 civilian casualties. Jets and bombs shook downtown as reinforcements arrived.
Soviet leaders and East European allies gathered in Moscow for an emergency summit amid rising independence pressures in Czechoslovakia Romania and Yugoslavia absent from the talks. Tass reported a pledge to “develop friendship and cooperation” based on Marxism Leninism.
Vicki Drake wins the Stanford University student body preliminary election with 1575 votes to 1232 for Dennis Hayes and 175 for Cissie Bonini. A runoff is set for May 14 as no majority was achieved. Drake says she dances to finance her education and aims to study Spanish literature.
A Secret Service agent on the White House detail reported his black-tie suit was stolen from his car near the White House before a presidential dinner. He borrowed a friend's tuxedo that was slightly too small to fulfill duty that night.
A seventh FILA fighter bomber, a $5 million swing wing craft from the TFX program, crashed 60 miles north of Las Vegas during a routing training mission. Both pilots parachuted to safety. the wreckage and crew were not immediately found. The pilots, Maj. Charles Van Driel and Maj. Kenneth A. Schuppe, both of Las Vegas, were with the 4527th Combat Crew Training Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base.
In Hominy Falls West Virginia rescuers report they are within about 600 feet of 13 miners trapped a mile inside the tunnel after flood waters forced a wall into an adjacent flooded mine. Two miners at a further point chose not to reach the group. Air circulates as water drops below ceiling level and rescue work continues with aid tents and field kitchens nearby.
In France a second heart transplant was carried out as surgeons at a major medical center completed the operation. Details on the patient or donor were limited but the procedure marks a second successful heart transplant in the country.
The forecast calls for variable cloudiness with scattered showers and a thunderstorm tonight with lows in the 50s. Friday will be partly cloudy and cooler. Yesterday’s high reached 74 with a 54 low this morning. A trace of precipitation fell overnight. In Montpellier France a 65 year old man received a heart transplant. The donor and patient names were not released immediately. The operation was led by Dr. Eric Negre at Montpellier Faculty of Medicine. France’s first transplant patient Clovis Roblin died in Paris on April 39 after 51.2 hours.
