Saigon curfew tightens as Viet Cong siege continues
In Saigon, 2,002 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers were reported killed in three days of heavy fighting around the capital. A 24 hour curfew was imposed on the western half to aid government forces while U.S. command noted light contacts overall. American and South Vietnamese casualties rose to 211 killed and 931 wounded, with 30 Americans and 181 South Vietnamese killed respectively. Tanks, helicopters, and bombers pounded western edge positions as refugees described Viet Cong bunkers in rubble. Authorities extended the curfew and warned of continued shelling ahead of Paris peace talks opening Friday.

Pope Paul VI to Visit Colombia for Latin American Events
Pope Paul VI announced a two to three day August visit to Colombia to attend the 38th International Eucharistic Congress in Bogota and to open a Latin American bishops conference in Medellin. It would be his longest trip and the first pope visit to Latin America, with possible air stopovers. He spoke to pilgrims at St. Peter's Basilica. his sixth trip abroad since June 1963.
