Elaine Johnson of Culver City describes a drastic weight loss experiment at Wadsworth Veterans Administration hospital. She has lived on water and vitamins for 101 days since January 28 and shed 115 pounds from 315, joining 11 others in obesity research, while keeping busy by serving food to fellow patients.
Heavily armed troopers moved into Birmingham as demonstrations continued for a seventh day. Gov. Wallace ordered 250 riot trained troops, later stepped up to 575. King warned of growing movement while police struggled to contain crowds. 10 officers injured, no confirmed Negro injuries. White House said a Justice official convened leaders for a first Birmingham meeting on the issue.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti show reduced war threat with high tensions. The OAS and UN Security Council plan meetings as Dominican President Bosch labels Duvalier a mad man and seeks to allow 22 Haitian opponents to leave Port au Prince. The NYT reports possible hemisphere sanctions, with U.S. support uncertain.
The Telstar 2 satellite functioned well delivering excellent picture quality between the United States and Europe. An Andover Maine receiving station captured the Tuesday night feed described as magnificent and very clear. a color transmission is planned for tonight between the continents.
New York AP reports steel labor talks likely lift employment costs by 2 to 3 percent after tough bargaining. Iron Age notes union reopeners since May 1 and Kennedy administration 3 percent guideline as a possible cap. A 2 percent rise equates to about 3 cents per hour. Steel consumption this quarter could near a record 20 million tons.
In Birmingham Alabama the Kennedy administration monitors a racial crisis as Burke Marshall and Justice Department officials meet local white and Negro leaders seeking a peaceful, locally driven solution. President Kennedy hopes Birmingham residents resolve the dispute without federal action.
In Moscow the co defendant of British spy Greville Wynne challenges Wynne's role as mere courier. Penkovsky asserts Wynne coached him in espionage contacts and helped during his London stay. Wynne admits delivering packages but says he did not know their contents. Chisholm denies involvement. Both Wynne and Penkovsky plead guilty to espionage and treason charges. trial set to continue, with possible death sentences for the Russians and lengthy terms for Wynne.
Washington reports Indonesia’s Communist party has moved into Beijing’s camp in the Sino Soviet split. A Soviet aid program of up to 2 billion dollars faced a major strategic setback as Sukarno leans toward pro Chinese lines. US officials condemned Afro Asian talks linked to PKI influence and called for economic stabilization before further aid.
In Groton Conn a flash fire aboard the nuclear submarine Flasher killed three workers and injured two, with one critical. The Thresher class vessel built by Electric Boat faced a quick blaze and a nine foot flooding tank in the stern, but a launch for June 22 was not delayed. Electric Boat and lawmakers called for investigations.

Jackson AP report details Mississippi legislative findings tying desegregation riots at the University of Mississippi to Kennedy political ambitions. It blames federal planning errors and actions by marshals and National Guard leadership for turning a student protest into a deadly riot, notes two deaths and extensive damage.

Betty Miller of Santa Monica Calif landed at Nandi Fiji proving the next to last leg of her bid to fly solo from Oakland to Brisbane Australia She completed the Canton Island to Fiji leg in 8 hours 26 minutes with about 1400 miles remaining on her 7100 mile trip to Australia to deliver a twin engine plane to a buyer there
