Birmingham police report jails crowded with Negroes amid a massive desegregation push. King announces more demonstrations as about 1,000 marchers are arrested including comedian Dick Gregory. Over 2,400 have been arrested since Thursday, with 200 plus more arrested earlier including King.
U S Steel may ease its hard line on wage and fringe benefits as wage talks with United Steel Workers near. Chairman Blough called a 12 cent an hour package “extraordinary on the high side” and noted no room for concessions amidst improving profits and higher prices.
U S diplomats warn Haiti faces no immediate upheaval as OAS and UN discuss responses to Dominican threats. Dependent evacuation ordered, while Dominican forces near the border and President Bosch weighs a possible strike. Analysts doubt a full Dominican conquest but fear renewed pressure on Duvalier regime.
Parochial school parents failed to win public school bus service for Catholic pupils as a House committee rejected a bill extending public transportation to private schools. Leader Clarence Blume called off enrollments and urged a return to parochial schooling, though some enrollments were not for the current term.
In Moscow British businessman Greville Wynne and Soviet official Oleg Penkovsky pleaded guilty before a military tribunal in a show trial at the Soviet Supreme Court building.
