Washington AP report says House GOP leaders split with Senator Taft of Ohio in a sharp dispute over housing legislation. The quarrel centers on proposed housing policy and its political implications within the Republican ranks.
The White House called a conference of railroad union chiefs for tomorrow to avert a threatened nationwide rail strike. Dr. John R. Steelman pressed leaders from the Brotherhoods of Locomotive Engineers, Firemen and Enginemen, and Switchmen to meet at 10:00 a.m. EST, with possible talks shifting to railroad management.
In Ohio primary returns Harold E. Stassen claimed nine state delegates while Robert A. Taft led the at large and pledged delegates. Bricker topped the at large results with 421,071 votes as Stassen declared a significant victory amid industrial area wins.
All 23 Ohio representatives in Congress are on the November ballot with 17 unopposed in the primary. Incumbents renominated include McCowen Smith Jenkins Brehm Carson and Crosser as Republicans with narrow margins for several opponents. Young defeats Thomas for at large seat while Bender is unopposed.
Former Ohio Governor Frank Lausche urged Democratic leaders to rally behind him, insisting the party must prioritize good government over patronage. Returns from the primary show Lausche defeating Miller and facing Herbert in November while Kerr and Sawyer shift to support Lausche.
First Lt. George D. Maxwell 27 of Umatillo Florida was killed when his aircraft crashed after circling the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Yocum at 3002 Grand Ave Witnesses reported Maxwell cut his motor over east works of Armco and nosed into a tree The plane broke apart and the pilot was thrown from the cockpit The wreck occurred after Maxwell had visited the Yocums as he traveled from Wright Field toward Camp Campbell Kentucky en route to his Atlanta base The plane was taken to Wright Field for salvage end of article notes Maxwell’s survivors and funeral arrangements.
In Cleveland, the tallying of election returns in Cuyahoga County stretched to 26 hours. By 3:30 a.m. EST, over 1,000 of the county's 1,504 polling places had sent results to the board of elections, while tabulators at headquarters had only reached about 200.
The 119 foot fishing vessel Tootsie crashed into ice 30 miles north of Port Heiden Alaska with 13 crew aboard and began drifting. Distress calls were answered by Coast Guard Cutter Bittersweet which headed from Cold Bay and expected to reach the Tootsie by 1 a.m. EST. The vessel reported leaking aft.
Incomplete returns show at least nine legislators losing renomination. House majority leader Paul L. McCormick lost to Roger Cloud by 24 votes, with six other Republicans also defeated. Two Republican senators were eliminated under new election laws, raising recount expectations.
Detroit emergency crews report three men dead and one seriously injured after two light planes collide over the east side. Donald W. Baer, 26, was thrown from his Cub plane and killed. Robert F. Heels, 25, and Joseph McKevitz, 56, also perished. Ralph Hanneman, 27, the survivor, suffered internal injuries.
About two thirds of 300 students at Copley High School continued a walkout to protest the firing of Principal Frank Weiss. Students rode buses, picketed, and ate in the cafeteria while classes were suspended. Deputies ordered an end to blocking entry as the superintendent urged return. Weiss allegedly lacked leadership and did not receive a new contract.
Alfred G. Chipchase 67 day foreman in the composing room wins a $2,500 bonus from the Cleveland Plain Dealer for half a century of service. He is the fifth employee in the paper’s history to reach the milestone.
Boeing filed a federal suit seeking 2 250 000 damages from the Aeronautical Mechanics Union under Taft Hartley as the 14 500 strikers halt B 50 bomber output. The union contemplates 5 000 000 in claims for daily wage losses and strike costs.
Charles Sawyer of Ohio was to be sworn in today as Secretary of Commerce after Senate approval by voice vote. The former ambassador to Belgium succeeds W A Harriman as roving ambassador for the Economic Cooperation Administration. Sawyer’s swearing-in ceremony was set for 3 pm.
U S railroads begin layoff notices and embargo milk troop and hospital trains as unions push toward a strike slated for 6 am Tuesday nationwide. Some lines plan full shutdowns while others seek limited operations amid Washington talks.
The Senate backed a 3.2332 billion dollar bill to fund an impending start on building a 70 group combat Air Force. The measure, part of a push to raise military air power, now returns to the House for action on Senate amendments.
Governor James E. Folsom of Alabama, once nicknamed kissing Jim, married 21 year old Jamelle Moore, his former secretary. The ceremony in Rockford ended a 24 month saga including a paternity suit and public marriage plans. The couple returned to Montgomery afterward, with Folsom promising to be back in the office soon.

President Truman urged prompt House action on the housing shortage calling it an almost acute problem. In an extemporaneous speech at the National Conference on Family Life he tied housing health and social security to family welfare and said the family unit is the basis for government.
Local express and railroad representatives warn of embargo orders on shipments of livestock poultry and perishables if the May 11 strike by firemen engineers and switchmen proceeds. Officials say embargo action rests with individual railroads or the White House guidance, with some regions unaffected for now.
Two labor leaders, James J. Leary regional CIO director and W. E. Lewis CIO field representative, were arrested for alleged violation of a temporary restraining order during an ongoing seven week strike. They appeared before District Judge William M. Benton who set a contempt hearing for Friday.
