Former Governor Frank Lausche won a sweeping Democratic nomination for governor in Ohio, defeating Ray Miller as Thom as J. Herbert held the Republican nomination. Lausche, long at odds with county leaders, led in votes across many counties and aimed for the November race.
Cincinnati AP report says a holdup man identified as Shorty started a fire in a barber shop after demanding $250 from Mrs. Cannon. She was wounded but survived. George Cannon 50 and his two year old son George perished after attempting to rescue the child from flames. The suspect remained at large.
In Columbus AP report Senator Robert A Taft held a 14 to 9 lead in contested Ohio GOP presidential delegates as returns from yesterday's 700000 vote Republican primary showed seven Taft delegates elected and seven leading for a total of 14. Taft already has 30 delegates without contest.
Butler Countians flocked to the polls in the county primaries the largest in history amid the Stassen Taft delegate battle and the Miller Lausche gubernatorial contest. Republicans nominated Herbert Miller for state representative. Democrats chose Augspurger and Reiff for county commissioners and Walke for sheriff.
R Kenneth Kerr publisher of the Lancaster Eagle Gazette telegrammed Ray T. Miller to state he supported Miller during the Democratic primary but now endorses Frank J. Lausche. Kerr urged others to publicly declare their support for Lausche for the good of all involved.
In Ohio Lausche leads Miller in the Democratic gubernatorial race with a decisive margin across most counties. Herbert secures renomination in the Republican primary. other statewide contenders include Cox Torok and Nye Sweeney Ferguson Tracy as results trickle in from 7,350 of 9,385 polling places.
Columbus AP reports the pending November ballot features Governor Thomas J. Herbert and challenger Frank Lausche for governor, with party lines for lieutenant governor, auditor, treasurer, attorney general, supreme court justices, and at large congressional seat. Incumbents noted with (x) as part of the slate.
In Cincinnati Democratic voters elected Peter J. McCarthy to the ward three chairmanship despite his death days earlier. His son Francis X. McCarthy lost in the fifteenth ward race to Philip Collins by 164 to 143, while Peter McCarthy defeated Edward A. Heitker 261 to 212. The election chair will be declared vacant and filled by appointment by the Democratic Central Committee.
AP reports the Ohio Synod United Lutheran Church will appoint a full time director of Christian education after June 1. Delegates at the 28th annual convention chose Rev. James R. Keyser of Lancaster for the post. He has served as chaplain of the Lancaster Boys Industrial School the last six years.
In Youngstown 187 of 225 precincts backed daylight time with 20 502 for and 16 105 against. The vote outcome shows strong support for continuing daylight time.
Ohio results show Stephen M. Young leading for Democratic nomination as congressman at large with 188 819 to 69 162 from T L Thomas as 7 300 of 9 385 polling places report. Six incumbents—five Republicans and one Democrat—lead in their districts with Carson and Bender among the strongest wins.
United Nations Truce Commission met in Jericho with Arab representatives to discuss a comprehensive truce for all Jerusalem. Officials noted quiet in the old and new quarters under a continuing cease fire, with intermittent shooting on the outskirts and a renewed indefinite extension of the cease fire while negotiations proceed.
President Truman remains hopeful for a settlement to avert a looming railroad strike. Negotiations failed in Chicago, with Douglass reporting exhausted mediation efforts and White House seizure powers referenced as a last resort. 190,000 union members threaten to strike, seeking 30 percent wages and rule changes.
Massillon Washington High School hired two Hamilton Public High coaches. Charles V. Mather becomes director of athletics and head football coach, Paul J. Schafer named assistant and basketball coach. Mather signs a two year contract at 5500 first year 5800 second. Schafer at 4500 annually.
In Columbus AP reports House Majority Leader Paul McCormick lost renomination by 24 votes to Roger Cloud. Other incumbents fell: James Black to Harold Short by 672, J Chester Ward's Knox County bid, Claude Woodward defeated, William Tyrrell blocked in Third District, and Fred Hagermeyer ousted Harold Martz in Warren County. Recount possible in Bellefontaine.
The Senate voted 48 to 30 to send the House-passed Oleo tax bill to the Senate Finance Committee reversing Senator Vandenberg's ruling. Fulbright appealed to bypass the Agriculture Committee, arguing finance would speed passage for the margarine measure.
A motorboat capsized in the Miami River near Dayton. Lawrence Brown, 37, of Richmond, Indiana drowned, while Robert Craig, 33, also of Richmond, was rescued by passersby.
Senator Taylor has been found guilty in a trial and announced plans to appeal the judgment. The case drew attention from local and state officials as the sentencing outcome was reported.
Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho, Wallace third-party vice presidential nominee, was convicted of disorderly conduct in Birmingham. Police Judge Oliver Hall fined him 50 dollars, gave 180 days jail, but stayed the sentence and placed him on six months probation with appeal filed. Wallace blamed the verdict on Jim Crow.
An Erie railroad freight train struck 75 year old Dora Ellen Austin at a downtown Ashland crossing yesterday, killing her instantly. The incident occurred as she attempted to cross, with authorities initiating an investigation into the accident.
John L. Lewis asked a federal court to dismiss Ezra Van Horn’s injunction request to block $100 monthly pension payments to retired soft coal miners. The move comes as part of a dispute among trustees Van Horn Bridges and Lewis over a $34 million welfare fund and a Works contract pension plan.
Secretary of State Marshall urged Russia to accept coexistence with peace in the United Nations and warned that removing Moscow without its consent could wreck the UN and spur rival alliances. He spoke to the House Foreign Affairs Committee amid debates on UN reform and veto power. He argued for better use of the current system over new structures and stressed obligations and pledges as crucial to peace.
Senator Taft reports a win in Ohio with 45 of 53 GOP delegates and says he has more first ballot supporters than any other candidate for the Philadelphia convention. He credits Ohio voters with overwhelming support after yesterday's primary where Stassen contested for 23 delegates.
Ohio GOP delegate results show Stassen leading in several districts as early counts from 375 of 599 polling places favor his candidates. Taft supporters claim gains in Seventh and Nineteenth districts while Taft totals trail in many regions. Final tallies depend on late counting of precincts across districts including Dayton Third Farm Sixth Springfield Seventh Toledo Ninth and Canton Sixteen.
