Beiruts downtown endures savage artillery duels and house to house battles as 100 plus killed and 150 wounded in clashes. Parliament delays election of a new president amid deep union among 98 assembly members and factions led by Elias Sarkis and Raymond Edde vie for the post.
May Day parades in Italy Spain and Portugal encountered violence and anti government protests with police mobilizations. East Germany held a military parade with reinforced Soviet weapons amid West Berlin protests. Brezhnev led 100000 marchers in Moscow while Raul Castro attended. Fireworks closed festivities in Peking as million residents celebrated. Parades in Vietnam and Laos urged further socialist development.
Today's forecast calls for showers with highs in the 50s and night lows mid-20s. Tomorrow highs in the mid to upper 50s. In Vietnam a first anniversary looms. In Italy protests erupt after Moro's resignation, tear gas injures about 20 and 40 detained. Portugal bomb near Lisbon targets the Communist party. one killed six wounded. Spain cracks down on anti government protests but Madrid hosts a 2000 strong Communist rally.
President Giovanni Leone dissolved parliament after Moro's Christian Democrat minority government collapsed. The 6th legislature ends after 80 days, with Leone summoning leaders to the Quirinal Palace for consultations and signaling a possible role for the Communist party in government.
Two Middleton residents Wilfred Vorhis and George Crout discuss life in nearby retirement communities as neighbors consider aging options close to home. Diane Fening, a 22 year old art history student, volunteers at the Cincinnati Art Museum several days a week with other Middletown women. A feature by Nancy Vorhis appears on page 17, and Ted Pollard reports on the $2 bill's waning interest on page 14.
Melvin Dummar tears up as he describes the nightmare of learning he was left 150 million in a will allegedly by Howard Hughes. The Salt Lake City document was turned over to a Las Vegas court and Dummar recalls the Nevada desert meeting in 1968 when he supposedly aided Hughes.
A 32 year old man Michael Gartenschlaeger was killed by East German border guards near Luebeck while trying to dismantle a self firing shotgun. Two companions escaped back to West Germany with unclear conditions. This was his third reported attempt to disable the weapon.
In East Liverpool Ohio evacuated residents began returning home after a railroad tank car report of dangerous fumes from vinyl chloride prompted the order. ConRail later said the car contained hydrogen peroxide and no injuries were reported. Police closed Ohio 7 briefly due to gas clouds and the derailment cause remained undetermined.
