Several hundred Vietnamese civilians breached fences at Tan Son Nhut Airbase Camp Alpha on the final day of the U.S. troop pullout. They looted the mess hall and other non tied items while Vietnamese guards watched. A U.S. officer said they took anything not tied down as the last planeload of GIs prepared to depart.
The last American forces left South Vietnam ending more than a decade of intervention. 1,034 U.S. personnel remained in country, including the Joint Military Commission delegation. MACV was inactivated as the USS Command ceremony closed after 11 years of operations. General Weyand cited the people of Vietnam shaping their fate as troops departed.
At Clark Air Base Philippines 67 of 587 U S prisoners of war freed by Hanoi arrived aboard two C141 transports. Crowds cheered as Lt Col James W O Neill praised the homecoming while security loosened and teens offered bracelets. One more American, Capt Robert White, expected to be freed Sunday or Monday in the Mekong Delta.
Michael Gebhart an electrician for Sorg Paper Co. was injured at about 7 p.m. when his feet were pulled into an overhead conveyor at the waste treatment plant between Columbia Avenue and Carmody Boulevard. Fellow worker Earl Feltner shut off the motor. rescue crews freed his legs and he was taken to Middletown Hospital in fair condition.
Secretary Richardson testifies that Nixon acts within his powers as U S warplanes strike Communist targets in Cambodia to press for a cease fire. State Department aides say lawyers draft authority memo. Bombing continues as Cambodia’s unilateral cease fire is in dispute and Vietnam pullout proceeds.
The National Farmers Organization orders members to withhold hogs cattle and lambs starting today after a record hog price drop and cattle price decline. NFO leader Oren Lee Staley in Corning Iowa cites drastic hog price fall and calls for 15 farmer meetings Friday to map future action. A nationwide meat boycott gains traction with protests in San Francisco and quotes from consumer and cattle industry figures highlight market uncertainty and holding costs.
Russian plans for a June visit by Soviet Communist party chief Leonid Brezhnev are reported by Chinese sources. The U.S. Embassy says it has no dates and the Russians have not commented. The trip would be a reply to President Nixon's previous U.S. visit. Mrs Nixon had hinted the date would be soon.
Pope Paul VI praised restorers of Michelangelo's Pieta after the sculpture, badly damaged by Laszlo Toth in a hammer attack ten months earlier, was repaired. The statue now has a glass shield and intruder-warning system. The 34-year-old assailant was found insane and ordered confined to a mental hospital for two years.
Rain and cooler temperatures are expected in the Middletown area tonight and tomorrow. Lows will be in the 40s and highs in the 50s. Yesterday’s high reached 58 with an overnight low around 50 and little precipitation reported.
