Unemployed truck driver Robert C. Foster surrendered to police after taking hostages at Wells Fargo in Santa Clara. Two bank workers, Janie Foster and Phyllis Matthews, escaped via a side door shaken but safe. Valerie Kaufman hid in an upstairs room and was unharmed. Police report Foster was unaware of her presence.
