Madison High School star Larry Carpenter eyed the basket as he fired a late jumper in the final quarter. Madison held a 43-36 lead over Waverly in Oxford AA regional action before the outcome hung in the balance.
Mike Holland, widower at 29, lost his wife Sue who froze to death near their Arctic cabin on the Yukon. Sue set out on a 30 mile snow machine trip from Stevens Village. malfunctions and extreme cold left her dead. Holland plans to move with their infant son to Stevens Village to build a new cabin and continue trapping.
Dita Beard sworn statement says the interoffice memo used by Jack Anderson linking ITT’s convention grant to antitrust settlements is a forgery and not her memo. Anderson asserts Beard acknowledged authenticity before his Feb tilting columns, prompting Senate Judiciary activity. Beard, hospitalized in Denver, says she drafted a memo last spring for W R Merriam about the San Diego GOP convention. Fleming cites shock as reason for lack of prior disavowal.
In California a woman on fertility drugs for years delivered septuplets, seven infants born two and a half months premature. After several died within hours and two survived briefly, only three girls remained, but they too died. Doctors weighed tiny infants and noted the parents declined identification. The mother remained in good condition.

Nicolo Carandini, for 20 years president of the Alitalia national airline, died in Rome at age 76. He briefly served as a minister in 1944 under Ivanoe Bonomi after Rome’s liberation, then as ambassador to Britain for three years before returning in 1947 to lead Alitalia.
