Judge seeks state probe of Mansfield Reformatory abuse
Lisbon Ohio AP Judge J Warren Bettis asked for a state investigation into alleged prison abuses at Mansfield Reformatory. He sent letters to Gov. Gilligan and Atty. Gen. Brown with sworn statements from two county men granted shock probation detailing physical and sexual assaults by prisoners with guards failing to act. Hively, a Vietnam veteran, said he feared harm more at Mansfield than in combat. Bettis, former county prosecutor, cited similar reports from “old timers” and noted calls to transfer to Ohio Penitentiary.
